Sanbon Sugi

Togakushi – the “most mysterious place in Japan”.

Before hiking all the way up to the Togakushi Shrine and seeing the avenue of giant cedar trees about two weeks ago, I first stood close and upfront Sanbon Sugi – the three sacred giant cedar trees planted 700-900 years ago. They were placed in the area in a triangle form.

Some moments of silence and wonder. If trees could speak, what stories would they tell? What have they seen and heard? Who were the people who came here? What did they pray for? I wondered. They speak of centuries of life here.
