One of the joys of traveling is that not everything worth seeing is listed in a guidebook.
While wandering through Prague’s Old Town Square earlier this year, I heard music drifting through the crowd. Naturally, I followed the sound, convinced I had stumbled upon a street performance or an impromptu concert. Musicians were playing, people had gathered, and the atmosphere was lively.
Only later did I realize it wasn’t a musical show at all. It appeared to be a public gathering associated with a movement supporting the restoration of the Czech monarchy (Three Kings March for Monarchy?). I didn’t understand the language, so I had no idea what was being said or sung. I was simply a curious traveler who had wandered into an unexpected moment in Czech public life.
It reminded me that travel isn’t just about ticking off famous landmarks. Sometimes it’s about pausing long enough to witness everyday life unfold – even when you don’t fully understand what’s happening. Those unplanned encounters often become the stories we remember most.
I still don’t know every detail of that afternoon. But I remember the music, the energy of the crowd, and the realization that travel has a wonderful way of surprising us when we least expect it.
